Mr. Klapmeier of Cirrus Corporation gave a wonderful talk on the evolution and design philosophy for their aircrafts.  It was not only thought provoking but had many elements which, we as can pilots, incorporate into our aviation passion to be professional and safe pilots.  The meeting was well attended and well received by the attendees.

I wish to thank Jack Sheridan for having organized this wonderful presentation.  On behalf of PAPA leadership, I thank Mr. Klapmeier for taking time from his busy schedule to share his passion and philosophy of aviation design.   His whole approach about 1.0 and 2.0 was very interesting.  I want to thank all the members who attended the meeting.

The annual elections are fast approaching.  I hope you have contacted Barry Axle to indicate your interest in running for office.  PAPA needs young members with 21st Century ideas and enthusiasm.

T-Hangar Update by John Doerner and Ed Chrzastowki

September 4, 2008

It has now been over 3 years since the completion of the 20 Southwest T-Hangars in April 2005, phase one of a project earmarked to be the replacement of the old Quonset T’s that are in the direct path of the inevitable extension of taxiway Lima to the threshold of runway 34.  There are currently 39 Quonset T-Hangar tenants and about 100 on a waiting list that nervously and endlessly hold their breath waiting for progress to occur for transitioning to a new home for their aircraft.

Annual Picnic a Great Success!

September 3, 2008

L. Korey Davis Scholarship Winner and Dr. Prasad

Our annual picnic was a great a success attended by more than 100 members and their guests.  It was a beautiful evening with light breeze to moderate the humidity and the temperature.  The scholarship presentation was great as it is every year.  It was encouraging to see the young man beaming with a smile when he received the certificate.  It was so nice to see all the members, their families and friends.  This picnic could not have a success without the help of lot of individuals who have worked diligently behind the scenes.  In particular picnic chairs Robert Hanaford and Mike Ballenger.  Thanks to your relentless effort.  Thanks to Madeline Monaco who sprang into action at short notice to manage the registration process.

Thanks to Dennis Rouleau who had made an offer between prize and potty and opening up the airport fence for easy access to to Hangar13.  We opted for potty.  Thanks to Signature for having supplied copious amount of ice along with a cooler.  Thanks a million to Jim McLennan for not only offering his hangar for the picnic but also having indicated an interest in supporting our future activities.  Above all thanks to all of you who participated in making this annual social event a success.
As summer days are dwindling and we are preparing to embrace colourful fall in all its splendor, I would like each one of ponder upon means to get young people interested in taking flying lessons and completing their certificates.  In this regard those of you who have an airpalne can invite them to ride with you for a flight and kindle their interest in flying.  As my term is coming to an end, I am actively thinking of ways and means to induct young people into our flying fraternity and to improve our image outside of PAPA.  I know this is hard pill to swallow, but nevertheless it will be a good exercise in introspective analysis.    I also to appeal to each and every one of you to make a generous contribution towards the scholarship fund.

Have you renewed yet?

June 13, 2008

May was membership month for PAPA At Chicago Executive. Many of you promptly returned your membership forms with a check, and for that we are grateful. You have joined in supporting the oldest pilot organization at Chicago Executive Airport. Our work representing you and the other users of PWK will continue. If you haven’t yet renewed, please send in your check and your renewal form TODAY!

It is especially interesting to note that in the past 14 years operations at PWK have declined radically, and yet our membership numbers have stayed virtually the same. Looking at the chart below, you can see that while aircraft movements went from a high of approximately 200,000 to a current low of about 100,000 per year. During the same time period, PAPA membership numbers have remained relatively consistent.

As new members are the life blood of any organization, we, of course, would like to increase our numbers. We welcome any new members who wish to join in. But we find it particularly interesting when student starts are down, aircraft sales are depressed, and operations at the airport are half what they were 14 years ago - that we remain strong. Thanks to all of our renewing members who make our educational, representation and social efforts worthwhile.

A New ATP Certificated Pilot Amongst Us!

May 24, 2008

PAPA At Chicago Executive would like to congratulate Howard Levinson on achieving an aviation milestone.

On May 24th he not only mastered the Garmin 1000 glass cockpit and Diamond Twinstar, but also at the young age of 84 successfully passed his ATP check ride.

Howard personifies the saying “A good pilot is always learning” as he has continued his pursuit of excellence in aviation from B24s in WWII through this morning’s accomplishment.

Designated Examiner Al Engelhardt signed Howard off on this, the next step in his flying career. We wish him well and await the next chapter in his wonderful story.
